As Mauritius celebrates National Day today, we explore this small island, one of the world's top luxury tourism destinations and see all it has to offer to the luxury travellers.

This year Mauritius will be celebrating its 46th anniversary of its independence and the 22nd anniversary of the Republic Day. Mauritius, a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean celebrates this national day in the in capital every year at the race course ground at Champ de Mars. It’s colourful and entertaining with a wide variety of artists from different cultures performing, singing and dancing, encapsulating all that is Mauritius!

If last year’s celebrations are anything to go by you’re in for a treat. Everyone’s involved; the police hoisted the Mauritian flag while the police band played the national anthem, aerial displays, paratroopers and a memorial film are just but a few of things that take place during the Independence Day of Mauritius. So why not head on down to this beautiful island for a relaxing luxurious vacation; escape the real world and step into paradise!

Stay in the West Coast of the island, the part of the famous for its amazing sunsets and its dry and warm climate – even during the winter months! The Maradiva is perfectly situated in this area, an exclusive haven of solitude and luxury spread over 27 scenic acres. It overlooks the serene, blue waters of Tamarin Bay and offers a variety of water sports and activities.

Explore the beaches, this is an absolute must for any visit to Mauritius, despite the fact that you’ll already be in gorgeous location believe it or not there’s more. The country boasts of some of the finest beaches in the world – they’re stupidly gorgeous. Some of our favourites include the Belle Mare Beach, the hidden La Cuvette beach in the north, and the rugged beaches of the South, especially Le Morne. If you love kite-surfing, Le Morne is the place for you.

Don’t forget to try out some unique water sports, the expansive coast-line of the island means Mauritius offers a variety of water sports and activities including snorkelling, deep-sea diving, deep-sea fishing, parasailing, and scuba diving. But it also offers visitors a chance to experience some rather unique experiences – an Undersea Walk. It’s scary at first but soon you start walking around on the ocean bed, making friends with colourful fish and miscellaneous sea creatures, simply breath-taking!

Oh we can’t forget to mention that you cannot visit Mauritius and not talk of the dodo. The island was the only known habitat of the flightless bird, which perhaps represents the most famous case of extinction after the dinosaurs. A Dodo Museum (Mauritius Institute) in Port Louis showcases sketches and skeleton remains of the creature.
